“Congratulations! Your entry to the 2025 City of Belmont Art Awards was successful.”

That was the opening line of an email I received a few weeks ago — and honestly, I had to read it twice! Out of more than 450 entries, my artwork was selected for display. I couldn’t stop smiling.

The City of Belmont Art Awards 2025 aim to give artists of all levels the chance to share their creativity and celebrate local talent from across Western Australia. All artworks were reviewed by a panel of independent arts professionals, who looked for a mix of emerging, local, and experienced artists. The exhibition ran from 13 to 27 September at The Glasshouse, and I’m beyond happy that so many of my friends and students went to see my piece in person. Their messages and photos meant the world to me.

My artwork, titled “Kookaburra,” was created in a hyperrealism style using shimmering watercolour pencils — my absolute favourite medium. I just love the way colours come alive when a wet brush touches the paper. It’s pure magic watching them bloom and blend into something vivid and full of life.

The piece features a kookaburra, one of Australia’s most iconic and joyful birds. I chose it not only for its cultural meaning but also for its personality — that cheeky laugh that can brighten anyone’s day. I wanted to capture both its natural beauty and the happiness it brings to the bush. The background, including the Australian flag and rustic textures, was drawn entirely in pencil to keep the focus on the bird, just as it naturally stands out in its environment.

The opening night was held on 12 September, but I was on vacation in South Korea at the time. My husband and our lovely neighbours went in my place, and they said it was an amazing evening — full of creativity, energy, and inspiring people. I didn’t win an award, but honestly, having my work displayed in a gallery feels like a win already.

I’m incredibly grateful for everyone who took the time to visit the exhibition and see my artwork. Your support and kind words keep me inspired to keep creating.
